Maddison Kitching
At the party the bearded dragon sat on my head, 2018
Oil, enamel, acrylic paint, oil stick on plywood
45 x 55cm
Over the years, Bluey – my childhood pet Blue Tongue Lizard – has been a source of many great memories. From saving up my pocket money to buy Bluey, to the beanie and tail warmer my grandma knitted for him to wear, Bluey was a big part of my childhood and his presence has lingered throughout my life. In 2018, I was given a box of old things my parents had collected from me when I was a kid. In the box were some diary entries I wrote when I was eight years old. Many of the entries mentioned Bluey, such as “I have a baby blue tongue lizard, his name is Bluey”; “My blue tongue shed his skin and he is better”; and “Bluey ate a stone. He thought it was a cricket”. These diary entries were used in a series of paintings I did in 2018 and this is one of them.
